The Book of Koli begins a breathtakingly original new trilogy set in a strange and deadly world of our own making.
Beyond the walls of the small village of Mythen Rood lies an unrecognisable landscape. A place where overgrown forests are filled with choker trees and deadly seeds that will kill you where you stand. And if they don’t get you, the Shunned men will.
Koli has lived in Mythen Rood his entire life. He believes the first rule of survival is that you don’t venture too far beyond the walls.
He’s wrong.
‘A CAPTIVATING START TO WHAT PROMISES TO BE AN EPIC POST-APOCALYPTIC FABLE’ Kirkus
‘KOLI EMBARKS UPON A JOURNEY AS PERILOUS AS IT IS ENLIGHTENING’ Guardian
‘THE BEST THING I’VE READ IN A LONG TIME. I LOVED IT’ Joanne Harris
‘INGENIOUS’ Helen Marshall, World Fantasy Award-winning author
‘DEEPLY ENGAGING’ C. A. Fletcher, author of A Boy And His Dog at the End of the World

Look out for the next novels in the trilogy: The Trials of Koli and The Fall of Koli

The first part of the Rampart Trilogy is an easy read, and an absorbing one, and while it feels sufficiently self-contained, it also leaves you eager to find out what happens next
Koli embarks on a journey as perilous as it is enlightening . . . Enthralling
The Book of Koli is one of my favorite books of the year . . . M.R. Carey has made a fan for life out of me. I recommend this book for all fantasy readers, and for anyone who is looking for a story that is different and engaging
Mike Carey has always been brilliant, but THE BOOK OF KOLI is next-level. He packs more pure invention into this book than most authors achieve in a dozen. Harrowing adventure, post-post-apocalyptic drama, and Black Mirror genius. Can't wait to see what happens next!
This is a BEAUTIFUL book. Gripping, engaging, and absolutely worth the time it takes to burrow yourself into its reality. I can't recommend it highly enough
Deeply humanistic, and full of lush characterization and worldbuilding...M.R. Carey hefts astonishing storytelling power with plainspoken language, heartbreaking choices, and sincerity like an arrow to the heart. The Book of Koli is one of the best books I expect to read this year
I inhaled THE BOOK OF KOLI in record time. It's the best thing I've read in a long time. I loved it!"
If you only read one novel this year, make sure it's this one
Narrator Koli's inquisitive mind and kind heart make him the perfect guide to Carey's immersive, impeccably rendered world . . . A captivating start to what promises to be an epic post-apocalyptic fable
Told in an enchanting, confessional first-person, we're with Koli all the way, from the stifling security of village life into the direst peril
An ingenious, dizzily provocative novel . . . Carey invents a fantastic far-future world, finding humanity in unlikely places
Readers who are already fans of M.R. Carey will not want to miss this, and new readers should take heed: this book might turn you into a fan as well. Highly recommended!
Vividly memorable and unexpectedly poignant
The cadence and pacing of [Koli's] voice adds a depth and richness to the strange and malevolent world
A refreshing, delightfully entertaining, and thought-provoking post-apocalyptic novel
Heartfelt, remorseless and painfully human...as fresh as it is terrifying. A jewel
Carey is a writer with big ideas at the heart of his fable-esque storytelling
I loved this. Koli's world is a visionary future where humanity is going backwards at speed. It's a thought-provoking and deeply engaging story and although nature is in revolt against humankind, being a Mike Carey book, it's also profoundly and doggedly humane
Carey writes with compassion and fire - strange and surprising and humane
